Wedding Car Hire Company Fined For Misleading Customer - 03/12/2007
David Arrell, from Taylorstown Hill, Tommebridge, was fined £200 at Antrim Magistrates’ Court today for failing to inform a customer that there would also be a charge for VAT in addition to the price quoted.
Mr Arrell (28), who owns wedding car hire company, “Daimler Limousine Hire”, informed a customer that the hire of her wedding cars would cost a total of £450.00. Having paid a deposit of £100, the customer confirmed the booking, only to later receive an invoice for £528.75. The customer was surprised to learn that an additional £78.75 VAT had been added to the amount quoted. The customer refused to pay this higher price and cancelled the booking.
A spokesperson from Trading Standards Service said: “Traders must always ensure that quotations and estimates given to customers include VAT and any other charges. Guidance booklets setting out the requirements of the Consumer Protection (NI) Order 1987 and the Price Marking (NI) Order 2004, are available from the Trading Standard Service.”
Consumers who suspect they have been misled by a trader's quotation or price indication should report it to Consumerline on 0845 6006262.
