Consumerliine has issued a warning today about the dangers of buying counterfeit GHD hair straighteners.
Consumerline, Northern Ireland's consumer helpline, has received a number of complaints recently from members of the public who have bought fake ghds both directly from websites, mainly based in the Far East, and on internet auction sites.
Stephen Thompson, Consumerline Manager said: “Fake ghd stylers are not only poorly made and short-lasting, but they are also very dangerous. Users are running the risk of damaging their hair or even being injured from electric shocks or burns.
“In order to minimise the risk of purchasing fake ghds, consumers should always ensure they buy from a reputable trader. A website may have a .co.uk address, however this does not mean that the trader is based in the UK.
“Consumers should also always check for a postal address on a website. If there no postal address, then the trader's location is unknown. They may even be as far away as China, making it extremely difficult to seek any form of redress, if the goods purchased are in fact counterfeit.”
The official ghd website www.ghdhair.com has a website checker which allows customers to check if a website trader is a ghd approved online retailer.
There is also a facility on the website which will allow consumers, who are concerned they have bought counterfeit products, to check if they are genuine.
Consumers who suspect they may have purchased counterfeit goods, should report it to Consumerline on tel: 0845 600 6262 or tel: 028 9025 3900 or log onto the Consumerline website at www.consumerline.org
